بله میشه، اگر دسکتاپ جدید رو به صورت کامل نصب کنید فرقی ندارن، بعد از نصب باید log out کنین و همیشه بعد از بوت در هنگام log in دسکتاپ مورد نظر رو انتخاب میکنین.
برای این که ببینین با چه دستوری نصب میشه میتونین در گوگل سرچ کنید یا در ترمینال با apt سرچ کنید یا software center، من از دبیان استفاده میکنم با apt سرچ کردم:

من از توضیحاتی که داده دو مورد رو مربوط به دسکتاپ دیدم :
xfce4
task-xfce-desktopحالا با دستور:sudo apt-cache show task-xfce-desktopتوضیحات مربوط پکیج ها رو میبینم. که در مورد این دو پکیج دومی کاملتر از اولی هست و گفته که شامل برنامه های کاربردی دسکتاپ دبیان هم میشه.
برای دسکتاپ های دیگه هم میشه سرچ کرد ولی به طور کلی میشه دسکتاپ رو کامل و با برنامه های جانبی نصب کرد که اینجوری میشه مثل اینکه از اول xubuntuنصب کرده باشید یا اینکه فقط خودش رو بدون مخلفات نصب کرد.
